I highly recommend that you pull an oil sample and have it tested. I could not determine a particular pattern to my coolant loss but it was intermittent and a significant amount. Though if the low coolant sensor kicks off, the vehicle has lost a significant amount of coolant. You are correct that the system may need to be topped off every now and then. That said, if after topping off the coolant the issue reoccurs or as noted above you see visual evidence of a leak, make haste to the dealership. The coolant system is not so sealed that it will never need to be topped off. Vehicle has been to the dealer since then for regular condition-based service with no issue noted and I've seen no typical evidence of any leaks. In my case, it took only a small amount of additional coolant to top off the reservoir and I've had no messages since. Or, if it's convenient, drop by a dealership and have them top it off. Solution: buy a bottle of the appropriate coolant and top off the reservoir as outlined in the owner's manual. If it is the valley pan (again not sure if they still use this design) it could easily hold multiple quarts of coolant and not sure but I don't think they can confirm w/o ripping the engine apart. It's very frustrating but demanding they find the problem isn't always possible. Used UV to look for leaks and spray, both nada. could not figure out where the coolant went. My coolant drop so low that the low coolant sensor kicked off 3x-4x during my ownership.
Don't let them send you on your way with new caps alone or you'll end up getting the error message again.
If they can't, it's leaking from somewhere else. Then less than three years later I lost another couple of quarts without any visible signs. I had mine fixed along with the front timing chains gaskets that were leaking oil, $$$$$. If you loose more than a cup and don't see a leak that's probably it. Next time the issue was the valley pan $$$$. My expansion tank looked and pressure tested fine until it finally went. Dealer and mechanic will suggest #1 but most likely not the issue.Ģ. Valley pan - not sure if this exist with the Newer V8ġ. I had coolant issues with my E70 V8 and is one of many reason I refuse to buy another.ģ. Of course my 2020 X6 M50i has 37,000 miles and is out of warranty. Went to the dealer service dept and my SA promptly and at no charge topped off the coolant.
No visible coolant leaks anywhere on the ground. Same warning reappeared Tuesday during morning commute. Driving home Monday evening a warning message came on stating the coolant level was low.
